Marwan Najjar - M - After a brief visit to Fih where my family and I celebrated our first Christmas in over a decade in our own home and home village, I can’t but describe this amazing striking feeling of patriotism and belonging to this lovely part of the world. This trip however was colored with a touch of sadness and surrounded with a halo of sorrow and a taste of little bitterness. I grew up with a bunch of kids playing in the old “baydar”( very few would probably remember),roaming in the "Saha" at night and studying under the olive trees( on occasions)or the heavily rooted old Oak tree in “Mar Semaan”. Many of these friends have vanished in the world of ambitions and achievements few of them dreaming to come back and settle in the old village while the overwhelming majority are planning to return back to their newly decorated homes in the US or Australia or Canada or Europe… Some of us, still unsettled in the Arabian Peninsula but planning to return, hopefully healthy enough to enjoy retirement under the shadow of the remaining oak trees in “Mar Semaan”. I am indeed emotional today as I remember my friend Saadeh Nakat. He accompanied me in the early 1970's in most of my adventures, along with Namroud (George Haydar), Bassam Haydar, Houssam Abdallah, Edward Haydar, George Semaan Haydar and Nicholas Nehme. Edward died at a very young age the day I was supposed to play the final of the northern Lebanon Volley ball championship in Al Mina. Some have gone to join the world of entrepreneurship in the US ( Bassam Haydar, Kamal karam, Houssam Abdallah) and some of these entrepreneurs came back(Wissam Abboud) and settled in Fih. Some are planning to retire soon (hopefully myself in couple of years) but some will never come back physically but their soul will remain in the shadow of the old Oak trees and the streets of this robust village. With Saade leaving us, I recalled the past in few seconds. I remember him standing tall in the Volley ball court, in his militant dress at “Saha”, in his smile, in his loud but persistent and courageously confident voice. I remember him at the passenger seat in a blue old VW then owned by Georgi Karam the morning of a summer in 1976 accompanying me to Daria to invite Nazih Lahoud’s team to paly in Fih… I remember him standing in front of his late uncle defending me and I surely remember him along with Namroud and Houssam, defending me in Amioun during a major dispute during a lovely clear evening debate…They know what it was about and am not going to elaborate further.. Who said that life is about money and cars and homes and properties… It is all about these few moments we cherish, remember and live ... these are the memories of our life when we were struggling to survive and living to struggle. To the soul of my own mother Mona who often used to call me with information that “your friends are here, stop studying”, to the soul of my friends Edward and Saadeh, I write these words of sympathy and empathy asking almighty God to keep them in heaven and peace and to their families I wish them long life full of joy and peace… Marwan

John Khoury - F - Our family lives in Arkansas and has recently become involved in the American Syrian-Lebanese Club here in Little Rock. We have a 2nd generation friend who is looking for her immigrating grandfather's family. His name was Elias Simon Dib and came to America in the late 1800's and was naturalized in 1914. He lived his American life in the Southern states of Louisana and then ending up in Arkansas. He has MANY decendants in this part of the US and would love to see if there may be some relatives in your region. Please let us know by contacting Joseph Haidar; who will be coming to us for a visit in mid-September. He would be able to bring whatever you have for this descendant at that time. Curiously, John Haidar Khoury (grandson of Joseph).
